Cubetti ico.gif Instruction to install custom contents in TS3

If you download custom content with format .package for The Sims 3 the installation method is quite different from The Sims 2. There are 2 different method: manual and automatic trough a sofware written by Delphy. Following we try to explain both methods.

WARNING we are talking about .package files but this doesn't mean you can put old The Sims 2 files into The Sims 3. The file format is the same, but files are totally different and incompatible. Don't try to use your old custom content in The Sims 3.

Manual Installation

First installation

The first time you install a custom content, you need an extra file: Resource.cfg eng. It is a file that modifies games settings without overwriting anything and it tells the game to load a new folder. In that folder you should keep all your downloaded .package files.

You can find more information about these files and how to download it by reading HERE.

Have you inserted the Resource.cfg file??

Have you downloaded Resource.cfg eng and inserted it in C:/Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 (C: is the letter of the hard drive where you've installed the game)?? Are you sure it is in the PROGRAMS folder and not in MY DOCUMENTS?

Good, you can go ahead...

Creating the MODS folder

Now, you are in Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 (in the hard drive where you installed the game). You've just inserted here the Resource.cfg eng file. Now you need to create the folder where to place all the .package files of your downloaded custom content.

  1. Right click → New → Folder
    Rename it as Mods.
  2. Open the Mods folder you've just created.
  3. Here create a new folder and call it Packages

Note for MAC

If you are using a MAC you have to follow the same steps. The folders you should create are the same too. The only thing that is a little different is the path to the game's installation folder, that is: Applications-> The Sims 3 -> Right click on the game's icon -> Show package content -> Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3. Place the Resource.cfg file here and create the Mods folder with its subfolder called Packages.

If you have World Adventures the directory is a bit different, as the folders must be placed in the EP's installation folder. The path is the following: Applications -> The Sims 3 -> Right click on World Adventures' icon -> Show original -> Right click on World Adventures' icon -> Show package content -> Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3 World Adventures. Proceed as described above.

All done?? Sure you've given the right names??

Check again if all is right. We are in the PROGRAMS folder and not My Documents. You should have just placed the Resource.cfg file and created a folder called Mods into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3. Within the Mods folder you should have created another folder called Packages.

Go ahead with the standard process for each .package file.

File d3dx9_31.dll

Some custom contents, not all but in particular mods and hacks, require an additional file, called d3dx9_31.dll.

If you don't see something in your game or you want avoid this issue, read and download here

How to insert .package files

After creating the folders, your game is ready to read .package files, so, go back to your downloaded files.

Usually, everything you download is in .rar or .zip format. Extract them directly in Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Packages, or extract them to a temporary folder and then move them to Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Packages.

Open the game and you should see them.

Note for MAC

If you are using a MAC you have to follow the same steps. Please remember the path to the game's installation folder: Applications-> The Sims 3 -> Right click on the game's icon -> Show package content -> Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3.

If you have World Adventures the path is: Applications -> The Sims 3 -> Right click on World Adventures' icon -> Show original -> Right click on World Adventures' icon -> Show package content -> Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3 World Adventures.

Install by using TS3 Install Helper Monkey

First you need TS3 Install Helper Monkey. Download programs file, extract it to desktop then run the installer.

During install TS3 Install Helper Monkey will create both Resource.cfg and Mods folder with its Packages subfolder into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3.

After install you have 2 method of install .package files:

  • Double click on .package files → they automatically go to Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Package
  • Select .package files, right click and choose where you want install them.

Note:

  • You can install multiple files at time
  • Doesn't support .sims3pack and other files.

More information on the MTS page.

Subfolders creation

The structure of Resource.cfg_eng file allow you to create up to 5 levels of subdirectories into the Mods folder. How does it mean? Let's see at this example:

Mods/Packages/Folder1/Folder2/Folder3/Folder4/Folder5

Note: you can add some folders at each level, such as:

Packages/Mods
Packages/Hair
Packages/Hair/Peggy
Packages/Hair/Rose
Packages/Hair/MTS

and so on.

If you add more subfolders the game doesn't load them. If you would like to add more subfolders, you need to edit Resource.cfg. Consider that 5 levels are a good compromise. More levels could overload your games and increase the loading time.

Note for World Adventure

This file is compatible with World Adventure. You don't need to move Resource.cfg file and Mods folder into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 World Adventure folder, the game read it even if placed into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3. Btw, if you have problems and the game doesn't load your custom contents, try to move Resource.cfg together with Mods folder to Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 World Adventure.

Alarm ico.gif WARNING!!
Installation method is compatible, but this doesn't mean all files you have downloaded are compatible!! Give attention before download new files, try them and if you get problems or game's loading seems to freeze and become so slow, remove that files!
