If you download custom content in .package format for The Sims 3, the installation method is quite different from The Sims 2.
WARNING we are talking about .package files but this doesn't mean you can put old The Sims 2 files into The Sims 3. The file format is the same, but files are totally different and incompatible. Don't try to use your old custom content in The Sims 3.
WARNING!!
|
The following article refers to the Resource.cfg file needed after patch 1.12/2.7/3.2 that enables the game to load custom contents in .package format directly from the your My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder. The old method to insert custom content in .package format is at the bottom of the page, click the spoiler to read it.
|
First installation
- DO NOT insert .package files into your Downloads folder (My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Downloads) → if you put the files here the game will not read and load them.
- After the patch 1.12/2.7/3.2 you can create a Mods folder to load custom contents in .package format directly in your My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder.
Create the Mods folder
- Go to your The Sims 3 folder in My Documents (My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3).
- Right click, New→Folder
- Rename it to Mods
- Open your new Mods folder
Note for MAC
If you are using a MAC you have to follow the same steps. The folders you should create are the same too.
Resource.cfg
The first time you install custom content, you need an extra file: Resource.cfg. It is a file that modifies the game's settings without overwriting anything and it tells the game to load a new folder. In that folder you should keep all your downloaded .package files stored into subfolders.
You can find more information about this file and how to download it by reading HERE.
Have you inserted the Resource.cfg file??
Have you downloaded Resource.cfg eng and inserted it in My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods??
Are you sure it is in MY DOCUMENTS?
Are you sure that your game version is updated at least to 1.12/2.7/3.2?
Good, you can go ahead...
Subfolders creation
The new system to load .package files allows only subfolders. The game doesn't load files from the Mods folder, it reads only subfolders.
The structure of the Resource.cfg_eng file allows you to create up to 5 levels of subfolders within the Mods folder. What does it mean? Let's consider an example:
Mods/Folder1/Folder2/Folder3/Folder4/Folder5
Note: you can add some folders at each level, such as:
Mods/Hacks
Mods/Hair
Mods/Hair/Peggy
Mods/Hair/Rose
Mods/Hair/MTS
and so on.
If you add more subfolders the game doesn't load them. If you want to add more subfolders, you'll need to edit the Resource.cfg folder. Consider that 5 levels are a good compromise. More levels could overload your game and increase the loading time.
How to insert .package files
After creating the folders and some subfolders, your game is ready to read .package files, so, go back to your downloaded files.
Usually, everything you download is in .rar or .zip format. Extract them directly in My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/SubfolderEX, or extract them to a temporary folder and then move them to My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/SubfolderEX.
Open the game and you should see them.
File d3dx9_31.dll
Some custom contents, not all but in particular mods and hacks, require an additional file, called d3dx9_31.dll.
If you don't see something in your game or you want avoid this issue, read and download here
Pre-Patch method for install .package custom contents under Programs directory
Pre-Patch method for install .package custom contents under Programs directory
There are 2 different method: manual and automatic trough a sofware written by Delphy. Following we try to explain both methods.
Manual Installation
First installation
The first time you install a custom content, you need an extra file: Resource.cfg eng. It is a file that modifies games settings without overwriting anything and it tells the game to load a new folder. In that folder you should keep all your downloaded .package files.
You can find more information about these files and how to download it by reading HERE.
Have you inserted the Resource.cfg file??
Have you downloaded Resource.cfg eng and inserted it in C:/Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 (C: is the letter of the hard drive where you've installed the game)??
Are you sure it is in the PROGRAMS folder and not in MY DOCUMENTS?
Good, you can go ahead...
Creating the MODS folder
Now, you are in Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 (in the hard drive where you installed the game).
You've just inserted here the Resource.cfg eng file. Now you need to create the folder where to place all the .package files of your downloaded custom content.
- Right click → New → Folder
- Rename it as Mods.
- Open the Mods folder you've just created.
- Here create a new folder and call it Packages
Note for MAC
If you are using a MAC you have to follow the same steps. The folders you should create are the same too. The only thing that is a little different is the path to the game's installation folder, that is: Applications-> The Sims 3 -> Right click on the game's icon -> Show package content -> Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3. Place the Resource.cfg file here and create the Mods folder with its subfolder called Packages.
If you have World Adventures the directory is a bit different, as the folders must be placed in the EP's installation folder. The path is the following: Applications -> The Sims 3 -> Right click on World Adventures' icon -> Show original -> Right click on World Adventures' icon -> Show package content -> Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3 World Adventures. Proceed as described above.
All done?? Sure you've given the right names??
Check again if all is right. We are in the PROGRAMS folder and not My Documents. You should have just placed the Resource.cfg file and created a folder called Mods into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3. Within the Mods folder you should have created another folder called Packages.
Go ahead with the standard process for each .package file.
File d3dx9_31.dll
Some custom contents, not all but in particular mods and hacks, require an additional file, called d3dx9_31.dll.
If you don't see something in your game or you want avoid this issue, read and download here

Open the game and you should see them.

Installation using TS3 Install Helper Monkey
First you need TS3 Install Helper Monkey.
Download the program's file, extract it to your desktop then launch the installer.
During the installation, TS3 Install Helper Monkey will create both Resource.cfg and Mods folder with its Packages subfolder into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3.
After the installation, there are two ways to install .package files:
- Double clicking on .package files → they automatically go to Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Package
- Selecting .package files, right click and choose where you want install them.
Note:
- You can install multiple files at time
- TS3 Install Helper Monkey doesn't support .sims3pack and other files.
More information on the MTS page.
Subfolders creation
The structure of the Resource.cfg_eng file allows you to create up to 5 levels of subfolder within the Mods folder. What does it mean? Let's consider an example:
Mods/Packages/Folder1/Folder2/Folder3/Folder4/Folder5
Note: you can add some folders at each level, such as:
Packages/Mods
Packages/Hair
Packages/Hair/Peggy
Packages/Hair/Rose
Packages/Hair/MTS
and so on.
If you add more subfolders the game doesn't load them. If you would like to add more subfolders, you need to edit the Resource.cfg folder. Consider that 5 levels are a good compromise. More levels could overload your game and increase the loading time.
Note for World Adventure
This file is compatible with World Adventures. You don't need to move Resource.cfg file and Mods folder into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 World Adventure folder, the game reads them even if placed into Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3. By the way, if you have problems and the game doesn't load your custom contents, try to move the Resource.cfg file together with the Mods folder to Programs/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 World Adventure.
WARNING!!
|
This installation method is compatible, but this doesn't mean all the files you have downloaded are compatible!! Pay attention before downloading new files, try them and if you get problems or game's loading seems to freeze and become slow, remove that file!
